Refill Instructions for Canon BCI-21 Black Ink Cartridge

STEP 1:

You must enlarge the vent hole on the top of the cartridge just large enough for the needle to pass through. You need to use a  1/16" drill bit. You will have to go through two layers of plastic, so make sure the drill bit passes completely into the internal sponge. If you do not have a drill and bit you may remove the top by working a think knife under it and cracking it off. Then you will only have to enlarge the inner hole through one layer of plastic. You can do this with a sharp knife.

STEP 2:

The cartridge will hold 4 - 5 ml of ink if it is empty. Insert the needle in the hole as shown above. Be sure to inject the ink VERY SLOWLY! If you inject it too fast it will foam inside the cartridge and the tiny air bubbles will cause your printouts to have skips and blank places. If the ink drips out the bottom the compartment is full.

An alternate method is to turn the cartridge upside down and let the ink drip into the bottom port slowly. DO NOT insert the needle from the bottom. This will damage the cartridge and the tines will not be able to draw the ink properly. This will result in problems with your printouts. Make sure you are over a paper towel or newspaper in case it drips out of the vent hole on top.

STEP 3:

If you removed the top put it back on and put a piece of scotch tape over it. Be sure not to cover the vent hole on top or your printer will only print a page or two and quit. It needs this hole open or it will air-lock.

Place cartridge back in printer and run cleaning cycle before trying to print with it. It is best if you can let the cartridge sit upright for an hour or so first, but it is not always necessary.

TO CLEAN YOUR HANDS:

Use soap and water first. If you can't get it off with that, try using bleach.
