Step 1) Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.

Step 2) We must remove the green or blue top.

Copy of 51649-topoff.jpg (8343 bytes)If you are patient and take your time you can get the top off without breaking the plastic. Use a knife and work in in between the colored and the black plastic, and just work your way around the top slowly until it comes off. The clear plastic with the six holes in it should remain attached to the bottom part of the cartridge, not the top.

Step 3) Keeping the cartridge on paper towels, take a syringe and fill it full of ink. It will take about 5 ml for each color. It is a good idea to tape over the holes to the colors you are not working on. Do not try to inject more than 5 ml into one chamber. It will overfill it the other colors will be contaminated and the cartridge will be unusable.

Step 4) Insert the needle fully into the appropriate hole (from the printhead side, the colors should be Magenta, Cyan, and Yellow for the 51649A, and Black, Photo-Cyan, and Photo-Magenta for the C1816A. If the plastic is not clear as shown insert a toothpick and withdraw it to be sure.)

INJECT THE INK VERY S-L-O-W-L-Y ! (Some colors will not be empty, so don't expect the sponge to absorb the entire amount. If you inject the ink too quickly it will cause it to foam inside the sponge and you will have problems printing. You MUST inject the ink S-L-O-W-L-Y to keep from getting air bubbles in the cartridge. You also must stop before the ink reaches the top of the sponge, or it will overflow into the next color chamber and contaminate it.

Step 5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other two colors with different syringes.

Step 6) Put the top back on and tape down in place.

Step 7) Set on a paper towel for an hour as a drip precaution. Expect a few drips.

  1. Follow the directions in the printer manual.
  2. If this doesn't work, soak only the printhead in simmering water for up to 2 hours. You may add up to 50 percent ammonia for tough clogs.
