Refill Instructions

For all Lexmark and Dell Black Inkjet Cartridges

The ink in these cartridges is retained because they have an internal sponge.

Step 1) Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.

Step 2) Using a 1/16 inch drill, drill a hole on the top, lower flat surface -- 1/3rd of the way from the edge. (NOTE: For the 32 cartridge simply peel back the label - hole is already there - no need to drill.) If a drill or drill bit is not available you may straighten out a paper clip and heat the end with a match or a lighter and then melt a hole through the top. It is only about the thickness of a matchbook, so it is easy to penetrate. You may also take a sharp pointed knife, place the tip on the top of the cartridge and spin the knife until you make a hole large enough for the needle to go through. There is a hole already in the top of the "hump" which you can use, but the needle will not reach all the way to the bottom of the cartridge this way. Therefore, you are more likely to have problems with air pockets trapped in the bottom of the cartridge.

Step 3) Keeping the cartridge on paper towels, take a syringe and fill it. It will take about 10-15 ml to fill this cartridge..

You must get the needle deep into the hard sponge. If you inject the ink too fast it will foam inside the sponge causing air to be trapped in the cartridge. It will not print with air in the cartridge, SO GO  S-L-O-W-L-Y.

Step 5) Set above a paper towel for an hour as a drip precaution. Expect a few drips. Do not allow the cartridge to touch the paper towel at this point, since the towel will draw out the ink.

Step 6) For best results, let sit overnight before using. Tape over the vent hole if you plan to store for several days to prevent drying out of the ink.

To Clean the Printhead

If you have no printout, or bad printout, such as skips, and faded spots try the steps below to correct the problem.

Take the cartridge out of the printer and take some toilet paper, or paper towel, and wad it up over the print head of your ink cartridge (that's the thingy on the bottom of the cartridge where the ink comes out). While standing, hold the cartridge in your hand, with the print head toward the floor and swing it hard, sort of like a softball pitcher winding up for the pitch. On the down swing really put some force into it. The force of gravity on the ink will force it through the clogged jet and clean it out. Swing two or three good swings and look at your tissue paper. When you see a good spot of ink on the tissue you have gotten it unclogged. Put it back in the printer and you're ready to go. If it still won’t print try the steps below.

The only other thing that can cause this is a burnt-out resistor in the print head. This can happen if you try to keep printing with a dry cartridge. The ink is the cooling agent for the resistors and when it is gone they overheat pretty quickly. If this is the case there is nothing to do but buy a new cartridge.

If cleaning the printhead causes the situation to get worse rather than improve, you probably have an air bubble problem. If this is the case, you need to re-inject some ink very deep into the cartridge. Follow the directions in the printer manual to run the cleaning routine.

If this doesn't work, you can sit the cartridge upright in boiling water for 2-3 minutes. The water only needs to be 3/4-inch deep. Do not submerge the entire cartridge in water.

Dry off the cartridge using a soft tissue. Re-insert the cartridge into the printer and run the normal cleaning routine a few times.

To Clean Your Sink

The ink is water-soluble. Use plenty of soap and warm water. You may also need to use Comet or a similar cleaner if the stains persist. Bleach works well to remove the ink.
