Refill Instructions
All Lexmark and Dell Color Cartridges
Step 1) Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you
can tolerate a spill.
Step 2) For most cartridges we must remove the top. NOTE: For the
33 cartridge you simply peel the label back – do not remove top. Lay
the cartridge on a solid surface and put the edge of a sharp knife
at the intersection of the black and colored plastic. Work around
the top to loosen it. Then pull off the top. For some cartridges
such as the 83 a small screwdriver works better.

NOTE: Different models will have the color chambers
arranged differently. It is a good idea to stick a toothpick or
something similar into the holes to make sure you put ink in the
correct chamber.

Step 3) Keeping the cartridge on paper towels, take
a syringe and fill it with 3-5 ml of ink.
Step 4) Insert the needle fully into the appropriate hole. Inject
the ink S-L-O-W-L-Y and be careful not to overfill and
cross-contaminate the colors. (Some colors will not be as low as
others, so the sponge may not absorb the entire amount.)
VERY IMPORTANT: All color inkjet cartridges are very inclined to
cross-contaminate from the bottom. As the ink comes out the bottom
while you are refilling it will be drawn up into the neighboring
chambers through the jets. You must hold the cartridge up and watch
the print head as you inject the ink. As soon as you see ink oozing
out STOP and wipe it off with a tissue. Then back the needle up and
continue. When you can’t inject the ink without it coming out the
print head STOP because the chamber is full.
Step 5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other two colors with different
syringes.
Step 6) Put the top back on and tape down in place, if necessary and
lay the cartridge on its side for an hour as a drip precaution. The
paper towel must not touch the cartridge during this step, since the
towel will “wick” the ink out of the cartridge.
To Clean the Printhead
Print heads get clogged from not being used often, and also from
running out of ink. It is always best to refill them before they run
out of ink. Take some toilet paper, or paper towel, and wad it up
over the print nozzle of your ink cartridge (that's the thing on the
bottom of the cartridge where the ink comes out). While standing,
hold the cartridge in your hand, with the print head toward the
floor and swing it hard, like a softball pitcher winding up for the
pitch. The force of gravity on the ink will force it through the
clogged jet and clean it out. Swing two or three good swings and
look at your tissue paper. If this doesn’t work you can try sitting
the cartridge upright in boiling water (only 3/4-inch deep) for 2-3
mintues.
If it still won’t work you likely have some burnt-out resistors in
the print head. This can happen if you try to keep printing with a
dry cartridge. The ink is the cooling agent for the resistors and
when it is gone they overheat pretty quickly. If this is the case
there is nothing to do but buy a new cartridge.
If cleaning the print head causes the situation to get worse, you
probably have an air bubble problem. You need to re-inject some ink
very deep into the cartridge. Re-insert the cartridge into the
printer. Run the normal cleaning routine a few times. If this
doesn't work, it is best to just let the cartridge sit for a day or
so, and this will usually take care of this problem. For more help
